Custom Orthotic Devices

Custom Orthotics: How do they work?

Learn how custom orthotics are designed to support foot function, improve biomechanics and help manage a range of foot and lower-limb conditions.

Orthotic devices are commonly used by podiatrists to help manage foot and lower-limb problems, improve biomechanics and reduce pain. While many people think of orthotics simply as shoe inserts, there are many different types of orthotic devices, each designed for a specific purpose.

The right orthotic depends on the individual. Our podiatrists will consider your symptoms, foot structure, gait, footwear, activity levels and the way your feet and lower limbs function before recommending an appropriate device.

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are devices designed to be worn in footwear to help influence the way the feet function and interact with the ground. Depending on their design, they may provide support, redistribute pressure, improve alignment, control excessive movement or accommodate areas of the foot that are painful or vulnerable.

Orthotics may be custom-made to suit an individual’s feet and biomechanical requirements.

Custom foot orthotics

Custom orthotics are individually designed for the patient’s feet and specific treatment requirements.

A podiatrist may use a combination of biomechanical assessment, gait analysis and foot measurements or scanning to determine the appropriate design. Custom orthotics can be manufactured using different materials, shapes and levels of control depending on the condition being treated.

They may be used in the management of conditions such as:

  • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
  • Achilles tendon problems
  • Overuse and sports injuries
  • Excessive pronation or supination
  • Flat feet
  • Forefoot and arch pain
  • Certain types of knee, hip or lower-limb pain
  • Some biomechanical problems associated with bunions
  • Foot fatigue and discomfort during prolonged standing or walking

Custom orthotics can also be modified over time if a patient’s needs change.

Orthotics are not one-size-fits-all

There is no single “best” orthotic for every foot condition.

Two people with the same diagnosis may require completely different devices depending on their foot structure, biomechanics, symptoms, footwear and lifestyle. In some cases, orthotics may not be necessary at all, and another treatment approach may be more appropriate.

A professional assessment allows your podiatrist to determine whether an orthotic may be beneficial and, if so, which type is most appropriate.

Our approach to custom orthotics

We specialise in biomechanical assessment and custom orthotic therapy. Our podiatrists can assess your foot function, gait and individual requirements before recommending an appropriate orthotic solution.

We also have an on-site orthotic workshop, allowing us to closely manage the fitting, adjustment and modification of custom orthotics to suit individual needs.

Experiencing foot pain or wondering whether orthotics could help? Common podiatric conditions can be diagnosed, assessed and treated by our friendly podiatry team. Book an assessment with one of our podiatrists to discuss the most appropriate treatment for your feet.
